install without command line access - 2006/09/11 04:36 Hi All,

I am trying to develop a flash multiplayer game, but the servers that I have do not give me SSH or command line access. Is there a way to do the installation via a perl script being run via a browser using the exec() or system() functions?

For example, I would go to

http://www.mysite.com/setup.pl

and then in setup.pl would be a line:

system("# python setup.py install");

Would this method work? Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

Kell

Re:install without command line access - 2006/09/11 07:55 Hi,

I don't think this is going to work.
Maybe this way you might be able to start Palabre (and I even have doubts, it will depend on your host), but you certainly won't be able to access it, because the server you're on has a firewall with very few open ports.

The best is to buy a "Virtual Private" server (vps) instead of a "shared" server which is not a real "Dedicated" server but will allow you to install palabre

Demo on thi site is running on an IMINGO VPS server (10€/m) (french) but you have many hosting companies providing this kind of servers (starting about 9$/m )

Just ask them first if you have a dedicated IP with your server and no blocking firewall before your server ( it's rare but some do ....)

Have fun !

Re:install without command line access - 2006/09/11 21:07 Is there an easy way to install if I have access to cPanel?

Re:install without command line access - 2006/09/12 09:12 Well again, maybe :)
if you have enough privileges on the server to run your own programs (palabre) and that you have an open port on the firewall ...
Cpanel is just a nice way to handle your system, it doesn't make you more "powerfull" :)

SORRY, website is currently mostly broken due to software changes on the server.
Hope to fix it soon ...

In the meantime you may still download palabre or use the forum
