Hey! Just discovered palabre - 2006/09/12 18:22 Wow, i searched for something like palabre for 2 months! I finally found the thing i was searching for! If i can achieve my project, expect some donations :P

To make a real-time game, do you think its a good solution to send the keys the user press, and the x,y positions only two times a sec? (i am making a top view shooter, usign some cool and basic graphics)

Re:Hey! Just discovered palabre - 2006/09/12 21:43 Hi, and thanks for your feedback :)

To have fluid movements I think you "need" at least 15 positions in a sec (for example for a car game with fast moves) but it's really too much for an internet connection.(not for a LAN where 25 is fine :)
I managed to only send about 5 and use some easing functions to make the moves smooth and keep bandwidth :)
I think that 2/sec might be too low for that

The problem when designing multiplayer shooting game, is to decide if the "shooter flash client" decides the hit or the "shooted flash client" because with the lag sometime you shoot someone that is no longer there :(

Have fun !

Re:Hey! Just discovered palabre - 2006/09/13 00:44 well this is why i would send the keys each user press real time instead of the coordinates. Then the client would do all the calculations. I am only sending the positions in case of an error.

Re:Hey! Just discovered palabre - 2006/09/13 17:05 Ok
The only problem you might have with that method is some "rewind" effect.
If the last key pressed was "up" the player will keep moving up until he got anything new, and if he receives with some lag a "left key" + "x,y" position, he might have reached this position half a second earlier and the avatar will blink back and then turn left.
But overall it should be one of the most accurate way to do :)

Have fun !
